Feeding Fruit to Dogs

Some of the fruits that are so nutritional to us have the same nutritional benefits for our dogs. That’s why, here at Healthy Dogma, we like to put fruit in many of our dog foods and dog treats. Let’s look at some of the fruits that are good for them.

Bananas—Bananas are high in fiber, which can help with digestive problems. Bananas also have a sweet taste that dogs love, and they’re easy to digest. Bananas also contain magnesium, which is needed for bone growth, and also helps with the body’s protein production and vitamin absorption.

Blueberries—Blueberries are beneficial for dogs for a myriad of nutritional reasons, but they’re also versatile, in that they can be fed to both big dogs and small dogs—they’re great for any dog. They’re high in Vitamin C, they’re high in fiber to aid in digestion, and they contain phytochemicals (natural chemical compounds found in plants), which help fight cancer, a process of which the American Institute of Cancer Research describes in detail. Blueberries are also a great source of antioxidants, particularly anthocyanin, a flavonoid that helps to fight inflammation, viruses, and even cancer.

Apples—Apples, like bananas, are high in fiber, but they’re also high in vitamins A & C. The Vitamin A here is handy, because it can help to improve your dog’s coat and skin health. Apples can also build your dog’s immune system. Other forms like applesauce or cooked apples are good for them, too. As we’re sure you’re aware, though, apples have sugar, so small amounts of them are best. They can be eaten with or without the skin.

This is why we put fruit in our dog foods, and in many of our dog treats, at Healthy Dogma! Our PetMix Chicken Dinner, for instance, has all three of these fruits!

Remember, though: everything in moderation. It’s best not to give your dog large amounts of anything, and this includes fruit. Do some research beforehand, if there’s any food at all that you’re unsure about feeding to your dog.

Best,
